Under-strength Selby just fail to slay the Dragons
They travelled to Huddersfield more in hope than expectation; ten ladies from Selby hoping to slay the Dragons.
And although they narrowly failed, eventually succumbing to a freak goal to lose 1-0, Selby’s ladies gave a good account of themselves, despite being one player short throughout the Yorkshire Division Two game.
Goalkeeper Jenny Kirton was named player of the match, after only conceding one goal in the game and impressing with some acrobatic saves throughout.
The one goal she did concede was a fluke, too - the ball flicking up off her pad and over her head into the goal.
Selby had looked strong up to that point, too; defenders Emma Forth and Leanne Sharp stood up well against waves of attacks from the Dragons, while Angela O’Mahoney, Jenni Davey, Nicky Curry and Fran Brooks attempted to control the middle.
Sara Coverdale in particular, ably supported by her two strike partners, gave a determined performance but just couldn’t make it count.
Selby’s young team of only ten ladies kept fifth-placed Huddersfield under pressure throughout, and the expectation is that if they can maintain this level of performance, they can improve on their current standing of ninth in the Division Two table.
Selby’s next game is against Garforth, at 11am at at Queen Margaret’s School.
Selby are three points behind Garforth, with a game in hand.
