Swans step up to the mark for cup tie

Acklam Hustlers............................. 15

Selby RUFC 3rd XV......................... 20

Although facing a side with the luxury of a large pool of players including first and second-teamers, Selby’s 3rd XV stepped up to the mark with a fine win that took them into the next round of the North Yorkshire Trophy, writes Chris Roberts.

Acklam hit the ground running hard and were five points up straight from the kick-off.

Shaking off their initial stupor, the Swans fought back and carved out an opportunity which Danny England duly delivered, the swirling arctic wind quickly dispelling any ideas of adding the extras.

The Hustlers made full use of their rugged forwards, whose momentum carried them over for a second try thanks to slick handling and hard running.

But the Swans bounced straight back with a fine run and try from Jason Goodwin after John Taylor made a telling initial break.

Selby almost stole the lead when Goodwin broke through again and, as they kept knocking, the excellent David Blaymire crossed the line as he found the narrowest of gaps with his quick reactions, England this time making no mistake with the conversion.

Scott Adamson and Mickey Parsonage kept trying to unlock the Acklam defence, but it was the home side who grabbed the last try before Leigh Adamson completed the scoring with a late penalty.

Selby had benefited from resolute defending along with the ability to capitalise on what few opportunities came their way.
