Sternest test yet for young Swans
Selby RUFC U15s..................... 24
Wath RUFC U15s..................... 17
Though initially falling behind as the 1st XV had done against Bradford Salem, Selby U15s eventually saw off their opponents from Wath.
But it was their sternest test yet, which sets them up well for this week’s encounter with West Park.
The hosts were soon on the attack, but the Wath defence proved largely equal to the task and, with good handling from their backs, were rewarded with the opening try.
But the young Swans equalised when Johnny Black’s fine try was converted by Leon Spowage, though it took strong defending from Selby to keep things level at half-time.
With quick passing and tackle-bursting runs, Wath went ahead again. But it only made Selby more determined with Spowage released to score through good forward play. And after Ben Asquith chased a long kick, Henry Levett touched down.
Wath, however, refused to give up and reduced the arrears to just a couple of points, after which only an excellent tackle by Finlay Wotton prevented them from taking the lead.
Spowage finally put some daylight between the sides thanks to strong rucking from Bruce Skelton and Charles Edmondson.
And when Wath countered again, the game finished with Levett denying Wath any further advance with a strong tackle.
Also defending well was George Stoker.
