Rugby Union: Nottingham 13 Doncaster Knights 27

DONCASTER Knights won their first battle of the season, beating Nottingham in their B & I Cup group game at Meadow Lane last night.

Knights led 21-6 following a dominant first half display and although the in-form home side came more into the game after the break, the result was never in doubt.

Knights defended superbly throughout and they regularly looked dangerous in possession - especially in the first half. Knights made a confident start and took the lead on eight minutes, flanker Jertho Rawling getting the touchdown following a forward drive from a successful lineout.

Rory Lynn, who had missed with an earlier attempt, pegged three points back with a 30 metre penalty, but Knights, with fly-half Tom Luke showing up well, continued to move the ball well and edge the exchanges.

Full-back Jamie Lennard extended Doncaster’s lead with a long-range penalty.

He also added the extras from near touch when winger Dan Smith, who has now scored twice in two games since switching from second-row, touched down from close range on 24 minutes after scrum-half Louis Silver had helped create the position with a darting run .

Lynn landed a second penalty on 27 minutes to make it 15-6. The home team continued to struggle to get into the game and it came as no surprise when Lennard extended Doncaster’s lead with simple penalty on 35 minutes.

He also hit the mark in stoppage time and on 45 minutes to make it 24-6.

Winger David Jackson threw the home side a lifeline on 50 minutes with a long-range try, goaled from touch by Lynn, and for a spell they looked the better side.

But Lennard’s 77th minute penalty sealed their fate.
