Overpowering Selby 3rds sink Pirates

SECOND-PLACED Selby thirds continued to increase the pressure on the top of the table after making light work of Harrogate Pirates.

The Swans, sitting just behind Leeds Medics at the top of the Yorkshire Merit Table’s central and northern district division two, made an instant impact grabbing the first score through debutant Andy Blunt after just two minutes.

Ted Townend was unable to add the conversion however made up for the shortfall six minutes later slotting over a penalty from the edge of the 22 after the Pirates incurred the official’s displeasure.

A lacklustre period of play so soon followed by a burst of a rapid exchange of points as first Townend added another penalty on 30 minutes, closely followed by the Pirates showing their intent by firing a shot across Selby’s bows plundering an unconverted try.

Awakened by the salvo, the Swans fired a broadside of their own with Jordan Barton putting the finishing touches to good work by Ben Spence and Jason Goodwin finishing off John Taylor’s decisive thrust to put Selby 21-5 up at the break.

Ben Rawson got in the scoring mood midway through the second half as Spence again took play up to the Pirates line.

Danny White, returning to competitive action, stroked over the extras for the thirds.

Mickey Parsonage got into character, continuing his scoring habits as he dotted down from close in.

Spence later followed suit with a trademark darting run and score.

Barton completed the plunder with his second try of the game.

It was a strong display yet again from Selby’s forwards taking on the Pirates pack with some shuddering contact close-in.

Adam Lee’s booming cameo appearances were again proving a crowd pleaser for the Selby faithful.

Top scorer Aiden Pearce tried and tried to add to his season’s tally ably supported by Goodwin, Taylor and Parsonage but finished empty-handed as the game ended Selby thirds 43 Harrogate Pirates 5.

With league duties duly discharged this weekend, all eyes are now turned to Ripon next Saturday as the semi-final of the North Yorkshire Trophy awaits.
