Doncaster Knights on a high after win

DONCASTER Knights will begin preparations for Friday night’s Championship One clash against visiting Moseley, their confidence boosted by their first win of the season at Meadow Lane on Friday night.

Knights, who had lost all their previous games this season - including their opening British & Irish Cup tie at home to Melrose the previous weekend - posted an impressive 27-13 win over Nottingham in their second group game.

“It was an outstanding performance,” said director of rugby, Brett Davey. “I thought we defended really well and we played some smart rugby as well when the opportunity arose.”

Nottingham supporters will probably have been surprised by the team spirit and enthusiasm displayed by Knights given their record this season, not so Davey.

“The team spirit has been fantastic all season,” he told The Star. “We all want Doncaster to move forward as a club and that’s why we are all here.”

Davey admits that the pressure on the club’s management had been growing week by week - though not from the board.

“The club have stood by Glen (Kenworthy) and myself and they understood the situation and it is not a club which dismisses people lightly,” he said.

“There have been some comments and some of it has been personal and you have to take it on the chin. But I got a text off (club president) Tony de Mulder after the game on Friday night and it is probably the best text I’ve ever had in my life.

“People have every right to ask questions and we’ve got to come up with the answers and we are not happy with where we are (in the Championship table).

“Young props Jack Bergmanas and Adam Tamanis were outstanding on their debuts. But now the focus is on beating Moseley on Friday and start climbing the table.”
