DONCASTER KNIGHTS: Matt out to beat home town club

DONCASTER Knights skipper Matt Challinor is hoping to lead his side to victory against his hometown club in tomorrow’s Championship derby at Clifton Lane.

The second-rower supported Rotherham as a boy and later played for Titans for two years before moving to Castle Park.

“I always look forward to the games against Rotherham and if we just won those two I’d be happy,” he told The Star.

“But it’s not just me who has played for both clubs, there are players on both sides and that’s what helps make it special and a real derby.

“Clifton Lane is never an easy place to go and Rotherham don’t lose many games at home, but we’ll be going there in a confident mood after winning our last two games.

“Fly-half Tom Luke has made a big difference since coming back from an early season injury. It’s not just his experience but his organisation.

“We’ve got some good backs but some of them lack experience and they need an old head like Tom.

“Despite our last two results, we still aren’t firing on all cylinders for the full 80 minutes, but hopefully the occasion will help us do that tomorrow.

“I think the fact that there is still more to come has to be a positive.

“Our pack and lineout was very strong in last Friday’s win over Moseley, which was pleasing because it is something that we’ve been working hard on in training.

“If your pack is playing well, and you are doing well at the set-pieces, then you are always going to be in the game no matter who you are playing.

“But they have a good set-piece and I think it’s important to at least try and get parity in those areas of the game on the day.

“Whoever gets on top at the set-pieces will be hard to beat.

“With us playing all our league games on a Friday night, I’ve seen them a few times this season. They’ve got a biggish pack and while they don’t play our expansive game, they very rarely turn the ball over.”
