Doncaster Knights look to finish on a high

DONCASTER Knights boss Clive Griffiths wants to end what has been a disappointing year on a winning note in Sunday’s Championship clash at Bristol.

The Welshman had hoped the Knights had started to turn the corner after successive defeats but he has had to have a re-think this week after last weekend’s British & Irish Cup Pool 8 defeat a home to Llandovery.

“We didn’t move on from the previous two weeks,” he told The Star.

“On the day we didn’t do what we had practised in certain areas of the game. But having said that some of the new ideas we’d introduced paid off and both our tries came from that

“I was disappointed with the result but I’m not despondent. I now know more or less what I’ve got to work with and I know what we’ve got to do. We’ve just got to get our heads down and keep working hard. When the other things click into gear, then hopefully we’ll be a bit more potent in those areas.

“We’ve worked hard on the defensive frailties that were evident on Saturday in training this week. I thought that we had improved things to a certain extent in the two previous games, but the wounds opened up again.

“I probably need a couple more games before I’m certain in my own mind what my best starting fifteen is and what better games for people to hold their hands up than games against Bristol and leaders Newcastle on New Year’s Day.

“Bristol is always a tough place to go. They are well supported and the crowd really get behind the team and we’ll have to be on the ball with our discipline. They probably aren’t as strong as they were last season when they finished top of the league only to lose out in the play-offs, but they are still a decent team as we are on our day.”
