Playing catch up: Doncaster Knights trailed early and couldnt fight back at Rotherham Titans

DONCASTER Knights’ boss Brett Davey will review Saturday’s 38-20 Championship derby defeat at Rotherham Titans today before turning his attention to Friday’s home game against high-flying Bedford.

“I don’t think the score reflects the game; it was a lot closer,” said Davey, whose charges had travelled to Clifton Lane buoyed by back-to-back victories.

“We failed to put points on the board in the first 20 minutes when we could have done and then we had Brian McGovern sin-binned and while he was off they added a converted try to a penalty to lead 10-0.”

Knights hauled themselves back into the game and trailed by just five points at the break. “We were playing into a breeze in the second half, during which time we gave away some incredibly cheap points, and we were chasing the game,” said Davey, whose side conceded a try shortly after half-time and two more during a 15-point purple patch.

“We tried to counter-attack and got isolated on a couple of occasions and we turned over too much ball and that was a big thing. We had the ball ripped off us in the contact too often for it to be a coincidence. That’s something we’ll look at in training this week. I’ve told the players that they are responsible for the ball coming back after making contact.”
