DONCASTER’S Castle Park played host to arguably the best ever side to visit the county in Saturday’s Championship XV-Maori All Blacks clash.

The Maori, who included four former New Zealand internationals in their match day squad, eased to a 51-21 victory falling behind early on.

Despite the historic game being shown live on Sky Sports, it attracted a stadium-record of crowd of 4,956, which beat the previous best of 4,012 set against local Championship rivals Rotherham Titans last season.

Doncaster Knights’ full-back Dante Mama produced an impressive try-scoring performance for the Championship side.

“I couldn’t believe it when I got over the line,” he said. “I didn’t expect to get the ball and it just came to me. To score in front of my home crowd was something special.The crowd were amazing.”

It was their first chance to witness the Haka for most spectators, and the near-capacity crowd watched in silence as the Maori performed the routine ahead of kick-off.
