Rugby player recognised for his prowess

Selby rugby star Martin Protheroe (above) has been recognised for his prowess by being picked for the Yorkshire President’s XV who played an Overseas team in a curtain-raiser for a county game between Yorkshire and Lancashire at Scarborough on Saturday.

Primary pupils are rugby champions

A rugby squad from Monk Fryston Primary School have returned as champions from a tournament involving mainly Harrogate schools.

The Finalists Bridlington RUFC v Selby RUFC competed for the Shield at Hull RUFC Ground. Bridlington were this years winners 16 - 12, in a closely matched final. Bridlington have now won the Shield four times. more than any other finalists in the Shield's history. Sporting Images Bridlington & Beyond have captured some of the action from the game featuring Both Clubs.

Bridlington Kiwi kicks fairytale ending into touch for Selby

Effort and application were just not enough as a strong Bridlington forward pack retained possession and controlled the game for long periods while Selby were unfortunate to incur the displeasure of the referee at scrum time and at the breakdown.

Protheroe helps Swans to fly

Selby pressure eventually paid off when Martin Protheroe charged through the Barnsley defence for the winning try which sent the Swans flying into their second Yorkshire Shield final in three years.

Swans fly to another final

It was a breathtaking end to a thrilling match which warmed the cockles of the hardest heart on a filthy day reminiscent of the worst that October could offer.
