‘World Cup’ win for rugby juniors Selby RUFC U13s 28 Sheffield RUFC 17
Selby’s young rugby union players put on a stunning show at the weekend, with the U13s making an astonishing comeback against Sheffield and the U8s winning a World Cup-style tag tournament at Harrogate.
Aptly (as it turned out) named the All Blacks, Selby’s U8s joined 14 other teams including Middlesbrough who were divided into three groups of five. Unbeaten in the group games, they reached the final play-offs where they brushed aside a second team from Guisborough (Australia) before beating Wetherby (South Africa) 5-3 in the final.
Meanwhile the U13s recovered from a 17-point half-time deficit to snatch victory in the dying minutes of a thrilling Yorkshire Cup round 1 tie.
It was a seemingly impossible mountain to climb, but that was to reckon without No 8 Oli Rayner (pictured with the ball) who powered his way over for a hat-trick of tries.
