Wayne makes a world of difference

Moorends A.................................... 14

Selby Warriors A........................... 22

The presence of club star Wayne Fennell made a world of difference as Selby’s second string rugby league outfit pulled off an excellent win at Moorends, writes Dave Sowden.

The postponement of the first team game meant the side could be slightly strengthened – and it was a good job with Ben Harris and Zennon Horrox also drafted in for what turned out to be a superb end to end match against a strong side who scored first and seemed to have Warriors on the back foot for long spells.

But with fine work from forwards Horrox, Ben Clarke and Matt Emmett, Selby gained a foothold as wingman Arron Sharp scored off a peach of a pass from Fennell.

A good pass from Nick Weaver then put Chris Birch over, with Jimmy Hanson kicking the goal. But the hosts levelled against the run of play for a 10-10 half-time score.

Moorends must have been confident of victory at this point as they were now going down the slope and indeed they were soon on a roll with Warriors pinned in their own half, the pressure inevitably leading to a try.

But Fennell (pictured below) then started to hold sway with an astute kicking game that gave his team better field position. And he duly touched down himself with twenty minutes to go, Hanson converting to give Selby a lead they wouldn’t lose again.

Birch then sealed the win with his second and Hanson added the extras.

Birch has only played five games for the club and is showing fantastic potential, as is Emmett, another newcomer, who had an excellent game. The first team visit Wortley Dragons this weekend and the seconds are at home to Cowling Harlequins with legendary coach Paul Helstrip expected to make an appearance as a second team player.
