UNBEATEN at home this season, Selby Warriors U14 trained hard in the week to right the wrongs of their heavy defeat at York the previous week.

But they found themselves on the end of another heavy defeat - and the 32-8 scoreline might cost them the league title.

Leeds outfit Whinmoor had won the previous fixture between these sides in September.

After defeats at Whinmoor and Acorn, Selby were keen to get back to winning ways and end the league campaign by securing the two points required to keep rivals Sheffield Hillsbourgh Hawks at bay,

But sadly it was not to be.

All the hard work in training came to nothing as the Warriors slipped into panic rugby, lacking composure in defence and creativity in attack.

Whinmoor got off the mark first with two converted tries to sail into a 12–0 lead.

Leon Spowage got the home side going with a try but failed to convert before the visitors crossed again.

The home team at times looked lost for ideas but Spowage did force his way over again to narrow the deficit to 8-18.

But just when Selby needed to hold out and consolidate until half time they let in a soft try and trailed 8-22 at the break.

With words of encouragement at half time ringing in their ears, the game was still winnable but Selby had to dig deep and improve in defence.

The hosts did start the second period in better fashion but it was Whinmoor who added to their tally, crossing twice more without reply from Selby.

Selby are now on equal points with Sheffield going into their last game of the season on Sunday.

They need to claim two points to have any chance of winning the league.
