Warriors seek crowning glory
Selby’s rugby league youth string – Warriors U14s – are on the brink of being crowned divisional champions of the Yorkshire Junior League’s first summer rugby campaign.
They are through to the play-off final against Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks after Keighley Juniors were unable to raise a team, with Hawks benefiting in a similar way.
And though Selby have beaten Sheffield both home and away this season, the two sides finished tied on 28 points – both with 14 wins from 18 games and just four losses each.
The title will be settled on Sunday at the neutral ground of Crigglestone All Blacks, H & S Security playing fields, South View, Wakefield WF4 3HN, kick-off 10.30am.
Starting out with just eleven lads, the young Warriors (pictured in their new tracksuits) have doubled their number and have defied all the odds to compete at their current level, helped by the introduction of summer rugby.
“Winning the league would be a fantastic achievement for the team, the coaching staff and the club,” said club spokesman Craig Hazell, adding: “Regardless of the result, they will march on into next season’s U15s campaign with a great deal of optimism and pride for what has been accomplished this season.”
Meanwhile a number of Selby district schools have been competing in the group stages of a national rugby league knockout competition.
