Warriors can’t quite handle glory chance
Selby Warriors... 20
Hillsboro Hawks. 26
A succession of handling errors in the cold and wet conditions cost Warriors U14s their play-off final glory as Hawks were crowned Yorkshire Juniors Division 4 champions at Crigglestone on Sunday.
But it still means they go up a division after finishing runners-up in the league.
George Stoker jinked his way over the line with only minutes on the clock, but poor handling subsequently gifted Sheffield far too much ball and Selby trailed 4-10 at half-time.
Harris then breached the line, but missed the conversion, and neither the bounce of the ball nor the referee’s whistle was with them as Hawks stretched their lead to 22-8.
Nevertheless, Selby looked the better team when they had the ball in hand and Henry Levett duly touched down near the posts for Harris to convert courtesy of a bounce off the upright and onto the crossbar followed by a drop over!
And though Hawks were dropping like flies, a controversial knock-on decision effectively gave them a seemingly safe 26-14 lead.
Loose forward Chaz Fothergill refused to throw in the towel, however, as he finished a great effort converted by Harris. But the expected four minutes of injury time never materialised.
Hooker Sam Hazell topped the tackle count, with Harris and James McKeon also strong in this department. Also on song were Dylan Tonks, Ethan Mack, Leon Spowage, Fraser Scott, Jonny Black, Ben Copeland and Sam Stephenson. The junior presentation will be held at Selby’s Railway Club on November 17. And you may also soon see the U14s on their sponsored bike-athon – a 27-mile trek around the Selby district – as they raise funds for their new kit.
