With a performance that outshone the result, Selby’s second string rugby league team put on a gritty display against the high-flying Trojans far above the standard normally expected from Pennine Division 7.
And with their first teams contesting some epic encounters along their way up the league ladders, there were big expectations for this match at the Webster’s Timber ground.
But the hosts were up for the challenge despite the visitors slipping three first team players into their starting line-up.
Battle ensued with fierce combat, but the more experienced Trojans were able to weather the early storm as the rather over-enthusiastic Warriors demonstrated their impatience.
The visitors took a 6-0 lead, but flying full-back Jordy Drummond reduced the deficit and, though Selby did cross again, they were pulled back for a forward pass – the referee’s decisions certainly didn’t help their cause.
Thornhill scored again to lead 12-4 at the break and the second half saw the game slip away from Selby in a way that the scoreline didn’t reflect. The contest was indeed much closer in every respect and Dan Wagstaff did intercept deep in his own half to race under the posts, but the visitors always had the buffer of a two-try advantage with some of their scores admittedly gifted to them. And frustration with the ref provoked confrontation which saw a player from each side being shown the red card.
Nevertheless, the high standard display by Selby’s blend of youngsters and older heads is testimony to the ethos that exists in the club.
Also shining were Shaun Bell, Sean and Stuart James, Simon Baxter, Daryl Taylor, Ryan Wagstaff, Danny England, Aiden McKay, Jimmy Hanson and captain Scott Weldon.
