Race night rescue plan

Currently facing tough times financially, the Sherburn Bears rugby league club will be holding their annual race night at the Foresters Arms, Kirkgate, on Saturday starting at 7pm.

Urging support for the evening, club spokesman Matt Orford said it was an ideal opportunity to help support your local amateur RL outfit, adding: “A great time is always had by all who attend the event. The night is open to all members of the public, and everyone will be made welcome.”

Explaining their dire financial straits, Matt said: “It’s about the spiralling cost of gas and electric along with insurance, league fees, kit-washing, kit repair/replacement and so on, not to mention the end-of-year presentation costs.

“We used to manage quite happily on the Over 30s v Under-30s fundraiser each summer, but now we have to run as many as three fundraisers each year to cover the costs of running the club.

“This is the first one, with a casino day planned in early spring followed by the traditional Overs v Unders in July/August.”
