DONCASTER DONS: Shaun Leaf back with Dons after 18-month betting ban

DONS boss Tony Miller has welcomed Shaun Leaf’s return to the club at the end of his 18-month ban for infringing Rugby Football League betting rules.

“If I had thought that Shaun had done anything seriously wrong then I wouldn’t have had him back,” Miller told The Star.

“I thought he had a rough deal at the time.

“Shaun went on Sunday’s team-building walk from Scarborough to Whitby and was welcomed back into the fold by the other players which didn’t surprise me because he’s easy to get along with. He also took part in the fitness testing session at Doncaster College on Wednesday and did well which I thought he would do because he’s been keeping himself fit playing rugby union during his ban.

“I think he will help strengthen the squad because he can play several positions and he is one of the best defensive backs at this level.”

Leaf will join in with the rest of the Doncaster squad as they get down to their first pre-season training session at their regular training base at the former Lindholme Prison gym tonight.

The newly-promoted Championship side open their league campaign the first weekend in February with a home game against Dewsbury Rams. Miller has arranged to play host to Super League side Wakefield Trinity Wildcats on January 27 and he is looking to line up two other warm-up matches the previous two weekends.

“With the Northern Raiil Cup format being changed we’ve got to be ready to hit the ground running,” he said.
