Brave Warriors wipe out 20-point deficit

Selby Warriors............................... 30

Littleborough.................................. 30

Showing bags of spirit in this Pennine League Division 3 RL clash, Warriors came fighting back against bigger opponents as they wiped out a 20-point deficit to share the spoils, writes Kevin Fellows.

And when Ben Harris touched down to equalise, it presented a last-gasp winning opportunity to Jimmy Hanson, who unfortunately went just wide with the difficult kick.

And in the dying seconds man of the match Wayne Fennell attempted to steal the points with a drop goal in the style of Jonny Wilkinson in the 2003 World Cup, but unfortunately it missed. Fennell had earlier scored the try of the match after some good handling created space for him to race over from 40 metres out, with Hanson adding the conversion.

He also opened the scoring with a neat try near the posts for Hanson to add the extras as Selby fielded a team weakened by work commitments and last minute cry-offs.

But Littleborough came storming back to take control of the game with Josh Parkin scoring out wide in the meantime.

However, Selby then switched off to hand the visitors a 24-10 half-time lead before further stretching it with a converted try immediately after the break.

Matt Stevenson then brushed aside two defenders to score in the corner (Hanson kicking the goal) and later added a carbon copy try with the conversion this time unsuccessful after clipping the posts.

And as Selby piled on the pressure, Harris crossed to leave the match all square.

Both teams are at home on Saturday, with the first team playing Woodhouse and the seconds up against Farnley ‘A’, kick-off 2pm.

See page 44 for ‘A’ team report from Dave Sowden.
