Bears recover as new dad flies in!

Sherburn Bears.................. 36

Ryhill Hammers................. 12

After coming under the cosh in the first half, Bears came storming back to take the spoils in style from promotion-chasing Hammers.

And their efforts were capped by two fine long-range tries from young speedster Ben Pugh along with a super score by flying full-back Alex Booth, who hasn’t played for two months following the birth of his first child.

Recalled to the side following injury to Danny Wood, he was named Willetts Kitchens man of the match for a vintage performance which exuded class and quality.

But Bears were almost immediately on the back foot as, at least with more enthusiasm this time, they initially struggled to find their rhythm, compounded by handling errors that saw the final pass repeatedly go to ground.

And with a tenacious Ryhill defence allowing no way through, they were 0-12 down at half-time with their backs to the wall.

Playing with the slope, however, they soon made good yardage, backed up by deep kicks from captain Martin Leahy, with giant prop Martin Jackson duly diving over the line for Leahy to add the extras. And with just twelve minutes of the half gone, the scores were tied after ‘man of steel’ second-rower Adam Withington grounded the ball despite the attentions of four opponents. With Ryhill rattled, Bears scented blood and Booth touched down for Leahy to add an excellent touchline conversion. Adam Wright also crashed over and Pugh’s high-speed moves topped them all.
