PENNINE SUPPLEMENTARY CUP

Sherburn Bears 24

West Bowling A 28

Sherburn’s indifferent form continued as they crashed out of the cup after a late comeback by the visitors West Bowling.

Bears reached the semi finals of this tournament last year but there was to be no repeat after the tightest of exits.

Sherburn struck first with back-rower Adam Withington scoring a great try following an excellent midfield break.

Captain and scrum half Martin Leahy added the extras to give Sherburn a 6-0 lead.

But Bowling struck back within five minutes with a good score from the side of the ruck a metre from the try line, following a couple of penalties from the home team.

The game started to get overheated with tempers starting to flare and when a Sherburn player was struck while trying to regain his feet from a tackle, it resulted in a red card.

The Bears spirits weren’t dampened too much as they scored straight from the penalty.

Strong drives from forwards Martin Jackson, Steve Gudgeon, Joel Booth and Rhys Hughes paving the way for Louis Stead to put a delicate grubber kick into the in goal which was pounced on by alert full back Danny Wood.

Leahy again added the extras to put the Bears back in front, 12-6, however straight from the restart Bowling responded by pushing the ball wide where the home team ran out of numbers allowing the wingman to race through to level up.

Bears’ centre Johnboy Fenwick crashed over shortly after but Leahy missed the conversion and then Bowling popped up with their own score only to miss their conversion.

Back-rower Craig Baker scored after diving on another excellent grubber from Stead, before Leahy elected to kick to take the score to 24-16.

From seemingly having the match won the Bears self-destructed, as sloppy handling allowed Bowling to score out wide to bring it back to 24-22 with five minutes left.

Bowling then went in-front for the first time in the match with just two minutes left to play and a successful conversion spelt the end of the Bears’ involvement in this tournament for another year.

Sherburn travel away to title contenders Kinsley Raiders on Saturday with a 2pm kick-off.
