Potts just shy of medal spot

ENGLAND judo’s rising star Connor Potts finished fifth in his latest championships - narrowly missing out on a bronze medal.
The 15-year-old (pictured above) has recently moved up a weight division meaning he is up against bigger and stronger fighters from across the country and effectively gives up three-and-a-half kilos during each bout in that category.
However, the Hemingbrough ace is determined to prove he is more than capable of competing at a higher level and again showed his discipline and determination in the North West Ranking championships in St Helens at the weekend, narrowly missing out on the medal placings.
Potts, competing in the 50kg category, burst out of the blocks in the North West Championships, making light work of his first opponent Jack Langton winning on 10 points.
It then took the Barlby High School pupil just 16 seconds to dispatch Jacob Gehlan with a throw.
However, fearless Potts was stopped in his tracks when he lost his semi-final bout on a penalty against Rob Hamilton.
That defeat meant the Goole Judo Club sports star was partnered up in the bronze medal match against Alexander Short and lost again on a penalty, finishing a respectable fifth overall.
Youngster Potts is part of the England Talent Squad and adds his fifth placing alongside his recent silver medal at the Midlands ranking event earlier this month.
Potts is appealing for sponsorship to help him travel to Portugal and compete on the European stage in April.
