Jockey back in racing world as ban is lifted

Top jockey Dean McKeown (pictured above) has returned to the world of racing following the lifting last week of his four-year ban.

The penalty was imposed for riding in such a way as to ensure the horses lost the race, but the Monk Fryston-based jockey has consistently protested his innocence and believes he has been unfairly treated by the British Horseracing Authority.

“There was no evidence of money changing hands or of contact between me and individuals,” he told the Selby Times as he broke the long silence that followed his banishment from racing.

“It hasn’t been pleasant, but it’s a relief to get it behind me,” he added.

Although he is unlikely to return to the racecourse itself, he is looking to be involved with breaking horses in, ‘pre-training’ and that sort of thing.

He still has a few horses in the stables of his Hillam home, to which he intends soon to return after having rented it out as a child care centre.

“The doors are not open straight away. I’ve just got to take my time and see what opens up for me.

“But I’m 52 now and I can’t see myself riding again. It would be a waste of time. Few of them are making a decent living now with prize money down in very difficult economic circumstances.”
