Doncaster Racecourse: Overturn justifies backing for Cheltenham

Will Bowler speaks to Doncaster Racecourse’s clerk of the course, Roderick Duncan, to get the latest news from Town Moor

OVERTURN showed why he is second favourite for the Arkle Chase at the Cheltenham Festival with a really impressive display at our last meeting at Doncaster - the opening meeting of our 2013 fixture list.

He was very nimble when in tight and ran excellently to easily see off Conquisto and two other rivals.

He is now very likely to come back to Doncaster on January 26 for the Lightning Novices Chase, providing the ground is not too soft.

Another nice winner on the same card was Calculated Risk, previously a course winner on the flat for Willie Musson, who was making his hurdles debut for John Quinn.

Running against horses rated higher than him on the flat, he went on to score in good style by six lengths under Dougie Costello at odds of 14/1.

Also catching the eye in this race was Last Shadow, who made late headway into fourth under a very patient ride by AP McCoy.

Eleven Fifty Nine was not as impressive as she maybe should have been in the Mares Maiden Hurdle, but wasn’t helped by a steady gallop and a trip that was on the short side, forcing Rachael Green to play her hand earlier than was ideal.

She has performed well in much better races in the past, meaning a step back up in grade is now called for.

The Reveleys were also in top form at Doncaster recording doubles courtesy of Harvey’s Hope and Dance of Time. Harvey’s Hope was held up in the 19-runner handicap hurdle, with James Reveley delivering him between rivals up the home straight to join a line of five horses at the last hurdle, before going on to score by a neck.

Dance of Time saw off fierce competition from Avidity, taking the race by a length and a quarter, well clear of the rest.

Back Bob Back returned to winning ways with a great round of jumping in the handicap chase, benefitting from having Paddy Brennan back aboard, that little bit more strength making all the difference to hold off Montoya’s Son.

Toby Belch also up, so we expect it to be a busy couple of days at Town Moor.
