DONCASTER RACECOURSE: Coneygree sets pace

The jumps season has started in fine style and we’ve already seen some fantastic racing action ahead of Doncaster Racecourse’s own National Hunt campaign getting underway later this month.

As I recuperate from a recent hand operation, I’ve had some time to keep a watchful eye on what’s been happening elsewhere in the racing world and Cheltenham’s three day NH opener certainly got their jumps campaign off to a fine start.

One of the highlights was Coneygree’s impressive victory in the Grade 2 Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle which saw the five-year old beat Bondage by several lengths.

I’m sure late breeder Lord Oaksey, who sadly passed away in September, would have been proud of the victory for the gelding male and his son-in-law and trainer, Mark Bradstock.

Meanwhile, Coneygree’s illustrious half-brother, Carruthers didn’t reflect this winning form after finding the combination of top weight and the bottomless ground too much as he came in last of the 11 finishers in the Henrietta Knight Handicap Chase at Cheltenham on Saturday.

And at Fontwell on Sunday Incentivise romped to victory in a highly contested race for the freebets.co.uk Southern National Handicap Chase.

The Richard Lee-trained nine-year-old overtook the pacesetting Mortimers Cross between the last two fences and Micheal Nolan managed to hang on at the end the three-and-a-half-mile slog.

Meanwhile the team at Doncaster’s Town Moor track are being kept busy as preparations continue ahead of Doncaster’s opening national hunt meeting, which takes place on Friday, November 30.

Always a popular fixture with punters, this meeting is looking like it will serve up a slice of thrilling racing action that will get our National Hunt campaign off to a glorious start before our attention turns to our two festive racedays, the Christmas National Hunt meeting on 15 December and the New Year meeting on 29 December.
