Golf club owner Sid Lamb has taken inspiration from the euphoria sweeping the country following Team GB’s success in the Olympics with his own athletics triple triumph.

And that’s after having received a heart transplant back in 2004!

For 61-year-old Sid, of the Scalm Park club, returned from the annual Transplant Games in the Medway with gold, silver and bronze medals – in the shot-putt, javelin and 100-metre sprint respectively.

Having succeeded before at the event, Sid says it’s all about raising awareness of the urgent need for more donors for those awaiting transplants.

“We’re hoping to get more people to sign on the register as there’s a long waiting list and some never get off it.”

Thanks to the miracle of modern medicine and the generosity of people carrying donor cards, Sid and his 90-year-old father Kenneth – who had a quadruple heart bypass 20 years ago – are still very active.

Clearly a great example of the benefits of a transplant, Sid will be staging his annual charity golf tournament at Scalm Park on September 29 to raise money for various transplant bodies, marking his own operation almost eight years ago.

There will be an opportunity to sign up on the day – run on a four-ball Am-Am format with prizes down to fourth and a Golden Ball event open to transplant recipients held concurrently.

Entry is £60 per team which includes a meal afterwards followed by a prizegiving, blind auction and disco.

Hole sponsors are being sought at £25 a time and other helpers will be welcome along with donations for raffles and prizes. To book phone 01757 210846 or call Sid on 079 732 84661.

Taking place at the same time is a fishing match run by John Harrison – another heart transplant recipient – with a first prize of £50. Entry is £15. Call John on 07876 700194.
