Woeful Cliffe at the wrong end of a cup upset

Fulford Reserves.... 3

Cliffe FC................. 1

After throwing away an early lead, Cliffe were at the wrong end of a cup upset in a competition that has seen them eliminated two years running, writes Malcolm Bryce.

It was a woeful result that saw the visitors dumped out of the East Riding County Qualifying Cup at the round 2 stage.

“Injuries and other commitments robbed us of some key players and it showed,” said manager Keith Tiplady, who added that his squad should simply shrug it off and move on.

“Credit to our hosts as they deserved the win. We aren’t the first team to lose a game like this, and we won’t be the last.”

Cliffe took the lead on 15 minutes when a Nathan Parker near-post corner was converted by Wes Pears as he made clever use of his chest.

But the team failed to get going after that and it was 1-1 at the break. And when Fulford went ahead, Cliffe switched to three up front to try to make a game of it, but the hosts merely extended their lead, although Cliffe went close through Lee Carter and Tom Hogg.

Both club sides return to league action on Saturday. The first team travel to Strensall – a Division 2 fixture that produced a dozen goals last season – and the Reserves visit Bishop Wilton in a D section encounter.
