Vaults come out showing no sign of rust

Albion Vaults.................................... 5

Cueball Fulford................................ 2

Although having to come from behind twice, Vaults finally ran out clear winners as they showed no sign of rustiness after their month-long break.

With man of the match Ash Greenwood setting the tempo with great energy in the middle of the park, Albion began brightly but nevertheless conceded in the tenth minute.

They drew level in fine style, however, with Danny Hewitt turning and blasting the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box for his eighth goal of the season. And after letting another one in, a Chris Harkin near-post corner crept into the net after taking a deflection, leaving a finely balanced half-time score.

A switch to a 4-3-3 formation had the desired effect as Chris Coxon put Albion ahead with his tenth of the season, beating his man on the edge of the box before unleashing a cracking finish.

Steve Rowbottom then latched onto Coxon’s pass and danced around a couple of markers before rolling the ball to strike partner Harkin, who made no mistake, with Rowbottom subsequently getting on the scoresheet himself to make the game safe.

But Cueball kept going and were only thwarted by a Greenwood clearance off the line and a breathtaking one-handed save from Ally Harris.

Thanks to sponsors ABscaff and Lodge Environmental Solutions as well as John and Sharon at the Albion for their top-notch post-match hospitality.

Albion entertain Wigginton on Sunday, kick-off 10.30am.

Meanwhile Station FC beat FC Barlby 4-1 in the York Sunday Morning League Cup quarter-final and Cliffe FC held an exhibition match among their own which saw the Under-23s triumph 5-2 over the Over-23s with goals from Lee Carter (2), Tom Hogg, Andy Edwards and Andy Kirkham while Aaron Lees and Steven Rowbottom responded for the elders. But the Over-23s prevailed in a penalty shoot-out with Paul Tanton’s shot being the pick of the bunch.

Cliffe visit Rawcliffe on Saturday with the Reserves at Tadcaster. Other results – York League Division 2: Church Fenton White Horse 4, Strensall 1; Thorpe United 5, Stamford Bridge 4.
