Thorpe’s game plan undone by Horsforth

A RESILIENT Thorpe outfit were undone in a strong second-half performance from Horsforth.

The visitors enjoyed large spells of possession in the first 45 but Thorpe’s game plan continued to contain and frustrate Horsforth.

United went ahead against the run of play when a Lewis Griffiths delivery was met by the head of Corey Littlefield before half-time.

Horsforth were level minutes after the restart when an effort gave United’s keeper Alex Ward little chance. Horsforth doubled their advantage through a powerful effort and Thorpe were caught out again when the away side’s strikers combined to fire them 3-1 ahead.

Looking for a comeback, Littlefield released Richard Buckthorpe whose shot was deflected and David Melling’s strike from the resulting corner could not find a way through.

Domonik Stankiwicz then saw his shot drift wide of the post and Lewis Griffiths’ effort was saved well as Horsforth held on.

The visitors pounced on the counter to make it 4-1 and later intercepted a goal-kick to finish off the game.

Thorpe’s man of the match was Jordan Todd.

KAL Tang was instrumental for Thorpe as they saw off a strong Snaith outfit.

Following a long break, both sides took time to get into the game and it was the visitors who eventually found a spark courtesy of the industrious Tang, who created an opening from nothing to slot home on 12 minutes.

Thorpe added their second through a neat first-time Sonny Mitchell finish following a defence-splitting pass from strike partner Tang.

The second-half saw Thorpe play at a higher tempo, however were guilty of failing to finish off a series of superb Jack Liddell throughballs.

Thorpe eventually extended their lead from Tang who latched on to a Luke Bainbridge pass.

However, it was Snaith who struck next using Thorpe’s complacency to hit back as they reacted well to a defensive error for 3-1.

Full of confidence, Snaith attacked well but were further behind when a Tang drive forced a smart save and the resulting corner was met by Daniel Skalmowski who bundled the ball home to net his first goal for the club.

Alfie Redmond’s tenacious tackling and marauding runs earned him the man of the match.

Thorpe now look forward to the draw for the semi-final and a return to action in the league.
