Sheffield Wednesday: Transfer windows drive Jones crazy

DAVE Jones has slammed the transfer-window system as the January market prepares to open next week.

The Wednesday manager believes that restricting trading to certain times of year has hindered the game rather than helped it.

“I think it’s crazy,” he said. “You should be able to trade all through the season.

“You pay over the odds for players [in the windows] and everybody is put under pressure. It’s wrong. There was nothing wrong with the way it used to be run. I don’t think the transfer windows help anybody.”

Jones is keeping up his search for January signings and says that progress is slow because clubs want to wait and assess their needs.

“We’re asking clubs questions, and they’re saying come back close to the deadline when they’ve seen what they’ve got.”

Jones has already had meetings with Milan Mandaric and is in daily contact with the chairman during his break in Mexico.

The Owls will take stock with a conference call involving the chairman, management staff and scouts, in between the New Year’s Day clash with Burnley and the home FA Cup tie against MK Dons next Saturday.

Jones hinted that the club may use the loan market and are keeping track of Premier League clubs: “We’ll have to wait and see what they get in before we can move.

“At the moment there is a fantastic atmosphere; everybody is doing his bit. If we can add to that, it does help.”

He does not rule out signing someone on a full transfer. “There might be a player who comes up and I can go to the chairman and say ‘we’ve found this player, it’s going to be x amount, can we do it or not?’,” he said.

“All we’re focusing on at the moment is the next game, and in between the games everybody is working hard behind the scenes trying to find players. We’ve got a hit-list but I’ll guarantee that anybody who is on our list will be on 20 other clubs’ as well.”
