SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY: Old boy backing Dave Jones revival
FORMER Wednesday and Cardiff defender Darren Purse is backing his old boss, Dave Jones, to lead the Owls to safety.
The ex-Hillsborough captain has seen for himself how Jones can inspire a revival.
Purse was playing under him in 2008 when Cardiff were 20th in the Championship at the start of December.
But they finished 12th and then mounted promotion campaigns in each of the following three seasons.
“There is still time for Wednesday - it’s not as if they’ve played 40 games and are down there,” Purse told The Star.
“I was in this position with Dave at Cardiff: we were near the relegation zone, and some of the fans were calling for his head, but he turned it around.
“So he’s had experience of doing that. There’s no reason why he can’t do that at Sheffield Wednesday. He’s also a master at getting teams to the top end of the Championship, like he did at Wolves and Cardiff.
“He’s definitely the man for the job. He’s also decent in the transfer window - there might be some money available so he can strengthen the squad in January.”
Purse was also encouraged by the Owls’ performance at Cardiff though they lost to a late goal.
“There wasn’t a fantastic amount of quality going forward but on the other hand they put in a performance. You couldn’t say they didn’t put a shift in,” he said.
“They worked so hard for the manager and the fans. You couldn’t fault them for their workrate. I think their performance deserved at least a point, and if Gary Madine had scored with his chance in the second half it would have changed the game.
“I think if they keep producing performances like that and working hard, they’ll get out of trouble.”
