SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY: JJ stakes claim for Owls return
jermaine Johnson has signalled that he is fighting to regain his Wednesday place.
He scored two goals - one a penalty - as the Owls beat Rotherham 6-2 in a behind-closed-doors reserves game at Middlewood.
The winger played just for the first half and may be involved in some way in the Chamnpionship match at Hull on Saturday.
He said: “I felt good in the game; I wanted to play because I’ve not been getting much game time. I want to work hard to try to get my place back.”
Johnson was in the side in the early part of the season but latterly has been a first-team sub.
“I don’t really know what went wrong,” he reflects. “When the gaffer played other players in the team, we started to win. It’s not easy coming on from the bench, but you try to help the team.
“My match fitness isn’t all there but I’ll just keep fighting and keep focused. I feel really pleased to have got two goals.”
He put the Owls ahead in the first half yesterday with a run from the halfway line and a low shot.
The Millers equalised but Johnson put away the spot-kick after a foul on Daniel Jones, and it was 2-1 at half time.
Wednesday’s line-up included Chris Lines, Giles Coke, Chris O’Grady, Nicky Weaver and Nejc Pecnik. O’Grady and Johnson were among players taken off at half time, and there were second-half outings for Chris Maguire, Paul Corry, Danny Mayor and Jose Semedo.
Maguire scored twice, and other goals came from Lines and Harry Grant. Rotherham’s scorers were a trialist and Kieran Agard.
