Sheffield United: Wilson banks on skilful Murphy
SHEFFIELD United manager Danny Wilson has outlined the qualities forward Jamie Murphy will bring to his promotion-chasing side.
As long as there are no last minute hitches, the 23-year-old will today move to Bramall Lane for an undisclosed fee from Motherwell. It is thought Murphy will sign a three-and-a-half-year deal and become Wilson’s second signing of the January transfer window following the arrival of vastly experienced defender Danny Higginbotham on New Year’s Day.
Wilson believes Murphy will be a major asset to the League One side in the battle to go up, citing his versatility as one of his big attributes.
“Jamie is quick, strong and has got good ability,” said Wilson. “He takes defenders on and puts them on the back foot. He has got an eye for a goal and can play on either flank or down the middle.
“Jamie adds that little bit of quality you need at times to open up defences.”
Murphy, a graduate of Motherwell’s youth system, said an emotional farewell to the Scottish Premier League side yesterday in their 1-0 defeat to Celtic. The former Scotland Under-21 international, who rejected a move to Blackpool a year ago, was named Well captain but was holding back the tears at the final whistle.
“I was trying to hold it in, but seeing all the boys behind me and the fans clapping me off, that was fantastic,” said Murphy, who won a penalty which was kept out by Fraser Forster when the score was goalless at Celtic Park.
Murphy, who hopes his switch will help him break into the senior Scotland squad, is thrilled to be moving to South Yorkshire.
He said; “Sheffield United made the biggest effort to try to get me down (from Scotland). It’s a massive club. I didn’t honestly know how massive until I went down there the other day and saw the stadium and the training facilities.”
Although Murphy is looking forward to a new chapter in his fledgling career, he is relieved Motherwell will pocket a fee for his transfer.
“The last thing I wanted to do was to walk out of Motherwell for free at the end of the year,” he said. “After 11 years here, that was not an option.”
