SHEFFIELD UNITED: Emotional day for family man Micky Adams

MICKY Adams, the Port Vale manager, has admitted that returning to Bramall Lane will prove an emotional experience for both him and his family.

But, speaking ahead of tomorrow’s FA Cup tie with Sheffield United, the 51-year-old acknowledged he is determined to dump the club he supports out of the competition.

Adams fulfilled a childhood dream when he took charge of United in December 2010 but left only five months later after failing to preserve their Championship status.

“I’m not sure how I will feel going back,” Adams said. “I’ve just focused this week on preparing the team and making sure they’re right. I’ve not thought about me.

“It’s special for me, no doubt, and my family. We want to do well.”

Adams joked he would “rather have gone anywhere else” when the second round draw was made four weeks ago.

“I don’t know what sort of reception I’ll get,” he added yesterday.

“Obviously I was the manager who took them down and I’ve always said, given time, I would have changed things around and would have been the man to bring them back. But I wasn’t given that opportunity and we move on.

“I’m a United fan and everybody knows me as that so it’s sad it didn’t work out there but five months is never long enough at any club. I felt let down by certain people but that’s football.”

With Vale second in League Two, Adams said: “They’re a decent side particularly going forward ... but we can cause teams problems at any level.”
