SHEFFIELD UNITED: Beware Micky’s return

United manager Danny Wilson has acknowledged that Micky Adams’ presence at Port Vale makes reaching the third round of the FA Cup an even harder task for his team.

Adams, a lifelong United supporter, spent 24 matches in charge at Bramall Lane before parting company with the club following its relegation from the Championship 19 months ago.

With the two sides preparing to meet in knockout competition tomorrow, Wilson said: “It’s a very tough tie, especially because Micky is there. He’ll be very determined and, picking up the reins from him, I know how tough his job was. He comes back here with nothing to prove and quite rightly so.

“Any team with confidence will be tough but we’re not short of confidence either. We’re taking this game very seriously, not least because there’s potentially a very big prize at stake.

“But before we even start thinking about that we know we’ve got a very difficult game to try and win first. Knowing Micky as I do, he’ll say exactly the same.”

Despite seeing his dream job descend into a nightmare,

Adams has proved a huge hit since returning to Vale. The visitors make the short journey from Staffordshire second in League Two.

With United fourth in League One, Wilson added: “This is a one-off game. It’s all about rolling up your sleeves and doing whatever it takes to come through.

“Everyone sides with the underdogs in the FA Cup. We know that, from the neutrals point of view, they’ll be wanting Port Vale to put us out.

“But we have to deal with that the same as we always do and just get on with it. They’re going well but we are ourselves.”
