Sam Edwards stars in battling Barlby win
BARLBY Raiders’ under-11s battled to a strong 3-1 victory over Pontefract St Joseph’s.
After soaking up the early pressure, Ponte were unlucky when a breakaway run saw their striker denied by the post.
Man of the match Sam Edwards then found Harry Ford out wide and he delivered for Jordan Atkins who thundered over the bar.
Then Danny Bracken, Alex Lynch and Edwards all saw efforts go the wrong side of the goalposts.
Ford was again involved after stepping past his defence, but his rifled effort cannoned off the crossbar.
St Joe’s counter attacks were stopped in their tracks by Kieran Barlow, Ryan Hill and Dan Toone, making it difficult for the hosts to create chances.
Barlby took the lead when Lynch found Bracken and his shot beat the keeper but not the crossbar, however, Ford was on hand to gratefully net the rebound.
The second period saw the Raiders play up the slope as they worked hard to create more chances with Lynch and Bracken keeping the Ponte keeper on his toes.
The Raiders deservedly netted again when Barlow picked up a Lynch throw, drove forward and unleashed a pile driver into the roof of the net.
St Joe’s came back again, forcing a corner and pouncing on a clearance to hammered home.
Ponte looked to get on level terms, however Barlby continued to press with Edwards getting his rewards when his pass was held up by Ford and then a neat one-two saw Edwards drive on to fire home for 3-1.
