Robins sink further into relegation mire
Rossington Main........................... 2
Selby Town.................................... 0
Although showing promise throughout the game, the Robins sunk further into the mire as they missed an opportunity to record a double over Rossington.
And with over 20 ‘cup ties’ to contest for a new manager whom they hope to secure by Saturday, the prospects of further relegation for the long-time NCE Premier League side are becoming all too real. As the Selby boys yet again failed either to find the net or to prevent goals at the other end, time ran out for them once more after a late Gareth Roberts shot was well saved.
Chris Dickman scored an own goal when attempting a clearance with a diving header, finding the net instead of the by-line shortly before the break after a scrappy first half.
Buoyed by that good fortune, the hosts subsequently bombed forward, immediately forcing Montgomery into a great save. But their next attack saw Nathan Fraser score with a neat shot from just outside the area.
Main then simply sat back and soaked up the pressure, though the Robins began to find their rhythm as they pushed hard to open up the home defence with the result that Cooper sent Rodriguez through on goal, the latter’s shot hitting the far post with the keeper well beaten.
“Had we been at the other end of the table, I suppose it would have gone in,” Town secretary Tommy Arkley dryly commented.
