After looking like getting something from this game, it was all spoiled for the Robins in seven minutes of mayhem which saw their young keeper sent off.

What appeared to happen was that Adam Walters simply did his best to keep out Michael Trench, whose subsequent dramatic dive was adjudged a foul on the part of the goalie. And the action was replayed shortly afterwards with Walters duly being shown a red card.

The Selby boys had in fact been leading 2-1 shortly after the break and matters were level at 2-2 before the bizarre sequence of rulings from referee Dave Godwin, who had earlier denied a home goal for some mysterious reason.

“We later heard that Trench was in training for Team GB’s diving team,” Robins secretary Tommy Arkley remarked with tongue in cheek.

The two penalties completed a hat-trick for Liam Cartledge who had opened his account just three minutes after Selby took the lead on the quarter-hour when he scored from an almighty scramble.

It was Ryan Smyth who put the Robins in front when he ran onto a neat through ball from captain Chris Dickman – and he repeated the feat to restore the lead for his side on 50 minutes, again supplied by Dickman.

Selby were looking good for their third victory of the season, but Greg Ramsden soon equalised and the ensuing incidents were not pretty. It seemed particularly hard on the distraught Walters, who had been gathering well and looking confident.
