DENNIS Hobson - boxing promoter, businessman and Sheffield Wednesday fan, is being tipped to become the next chairman of Scunthorpe United, writes Bob Westerdale.

Chairman Steve Wharton is stepping down from his post at the end of the season and Hobson thinks he can modernise the club and help drag it away from the lower reaches of League One.

The club has yet to make a formal announcement on the issue.

But talks with Hobson have been underway for some time and the Sheffielder thinks he has the contacts, energy and ideas to reinvigorate the club, beaten 3-0 by Sheffield United on Boxing Day.

Hobson, whose greatest sporting achievement was to help guide Sheffield’s Clinton Woods to the IBF light heavyweight title is also consumed with the prospect of helping Doncaster’s European bantamweight Jamie McDonnell, 26, to similar status.
