Midnight football league season gets underway

NIGHT time football matches have kicked-off in Selby in a bid to keep young people off the streets.

The Midnight Soccer League is offering youngsters, aged between 11 and 19, the chance to improve their football skills in the weekly two-hour supervised sessions.

The league, based at Selby’s Fire Station Recreation Ground in Canal Street, has also been launched to offer more sports opportunities following the devastating fire which demolished the area’s sports centre.

Robin Bedford, sports development officer in Selby, said: “Since the fire at the Abbey Leisure Centre young people really haven’t had a venue for this type of activity, so we’re really excited about it.”

More than a dozen young people turned up for Friday’s inaugural session and each match is overseen by York City coaches.

There is also a room to relax and indoor activities will be on offer for those who do not want to play football.

Selby District Council, Selby Fire Station and York City have teamed up with the Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust to hold the league following a successful launch in Lancashire.

Selby District Council’s deputy leader Gillian Ivey helped officially launch the league, adding: “We’re delighted to be giving the young people of Selby this chance to enjoy a game they love in a safe and supported environment. Even if they are not playing they can come along and watch, cheer on their friends and take part in some of the other activities.

“By providing the young people with something to do, we are hoping to give them a real alternative to hanging around the streets on a Friday night, which in turn may help us to address some issues of a anti-social behaviour.

“The sessions are a great example of how Selby District Council is working in partnership with other organisations.

“They will teach the young people about team-work and leadership, being a good sport and socialising. They will also help to improve the young people’s confidence, self-esteem and overall fitness.”

Sessions start at 7pm every Friday.
