Golf day bunkers badly-beaten Boro

Partly because they were bunkered by the clash of the club’s annual golf day, Hemingbrough United FC had a particularly bad weekend with all three teams suffering defeats, and both Saturday sides on the receiving end of a hammering, writes Oli Falkingham.

The golf outing actually happened on Friday, but it clearly took its toll as the first team went down 5-0 at home to Pocklington Town.

And despite being on level terms at the break, Boro’s second string went down 3-7 at Rowntrees with goals from Darryl Tate, Andrew Davies and Ricki Hutton.

And a miserable weekend was compounded next day with the Sunday side’s exit at the first round stage from the East Riding Cup with a 1-2 defeat by Hanson Electricals.

This weekend the first team entertain newly-promoted Aviva while the Reserves make the short journey to Riccall Res for round 1 of the FA Junior Cup. And on Sunday, Boro make the long trip to Malton to face Derwent United.

Meanwhile twenty teams took part in Hemingbrough Cricket Club’s ninth golf day at The Oaks where the winners were No Chancers!

The longest drive on a hole sponsored by Wallworks Photography went to Matty Aked and the ladies’ winner – on a hole sponsored by A2B Travel – was Jane Hamilton.

The prize for the worst drive went to Marc Collins on the first hole, which was sponsored by KML Flooring.

Chris Caudwell had a good day, winning nearest-the-pin and an adjusted longest drive, and Oaks member Richard Seels won the men’s nearest-the-pin.

Each team were treated to a bacon sandwich and coffee before their round as well as an excellent three-course meal afterwards.

Organiser Malc Calvert was delighted with the day, which raised money for the club, and wishes to thank all the sponsors and players for contributing to a memorable event.

Next year’s date is Friday September 20 at the same venue and, as the tenth anniversary, promises to be a special occasion.

There were no winners of the Hemingbrough FC weekly lottery when Simon Gummerson drew the numbers 11, 26 & 45 at the Crown Inn on Sunday night. The jackpot now stands at £150.
