DONCASTER Rovers climbed into the top-six in League One for the first time since the opening weeks of the season following last night’s 2-1 win over leaders Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park.

Former Tranmere striker Iain Hume scored an injury-time winner following a one-two with Billly Paynter to secure Rovers their third win in four games and sentence Ronnie Moore’s side to their first home defeat of the season.

But victory came at price with leading scorer David Cotterill (calf) and defender Paul Quinn (groin) both set to miss Saturday’s game at Notts County.

“To say it was a patched-up team, defensively at least, the determination they showed was absolutely tremendous,” said Rovers’ boss Dean Saunders.

“They are a good team and they will rip most sides apart. Andy Robinson and Bakayoko were a threat coming down the left in the first half.

“We had three great chances in the first half but didn’t take one - Billy Paynter hitting the bar.

“They had lots of corners and crosses into the box but they didn’t get that many chances because we put our bodies on the line.

“Rob Jones headed everything in the box as usual.

“Billy gave us the lead early in the second half with a good goal - it was a good striker’s goal.

“We had other chances but it was just like the Alamo in the second half but we are hard to score past.

“When they scored on 87 minutes I thought we’d lost two points and might lose another one but Iain Hume grabbed us a winner.”
