DONCASTER ROVERS: Iain Hume set to stay?

Deal maker: Dean Saunders

Deal maker: Dean Saunders

DONCASTER Rovers will try to keep front man Iain Hume at the club deal until the end of the season.

Hume’s loan spell is due to end in January, but Rovers manager Dean Saunders said he was hoping to extend it to the end of the campaign at least.

“We are trying to do a deal now and get him signed up either until the end of the season or on a proper contract,” he said.

“His agent and the two clubs (Rovers and Preston) are talking at the moment.”

Hume was a key part in Rovers’ 3-1 FA Cup victory against Conference North side Bradford Park Avenue at the Keepmoat Stadium, which has set up a second round match away at Oldham Athletic on the first weekend in December.

The former Barnsley striker scored the second goal and Saunders said he was delighted that Preston allowed him to be available for the Cup.

“I was pleased he could play for us against Bradford because we needed him out there. He looked sharp and scored a great goal.”

Saunders said Rovers did well to comfortably see off a sold Park Avenue side. But they didn’t have things all their own way and he admitted he wasn’t able to relax until Chris Brown headed home Rovers third goal on 76 minutes.

“I knew that they were a decent team because we had played them in pre-season and had to come back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3,” said the Rovers boss.

“So I knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game, but going 2-0 up helped us relax a little bit. But fair play to them they scored a brilliant goal - it was Premier League standard.

“We had a nervous 20 minutes after that and one mistake away from an upset or a replay.

“Although to be honest I felt quite comfortable on the bench, it could have happened, but we managed to get a third goal - a great header by Chris Brown.”

Rovers are set to entertain the Latics in a rearranged league match just four days before their Cup tie.
