DONCASTER Rovers will have to play better than they did in last night’s League One clash against Crewe at the Keepmoat Stadium if they hope to remain on the Wembley trail in the JP Trophy.

Rovers will travel to Gresty Road in the Northern Area quarter-final early next month having suffered a 2-0 home defeat against the Railwaymen.

Manager Dean Saunders isn’t looking that far ahead, however, and his main concern last night was skipper Rob Jones, taken to hospital with a badly swollen forehead following a clash of heads midway through the first half.

Reflecting on Rovers first defeat in eight league and cup games, Saunders said:” We missed too many chances. We had five great chances and missed them all.

“Iain Hume’s gone through right on half-time, after we conceded an elementary goal early on, but whereas his shot went in last week, it didn’t tonight.

“Paul Keegan missed an open goal when hitting the bar in the second half, and we had other chances but their keeper has made some brilliant saves.

“But we’ve had a brilliant run and I can’t complain but things didn’t go for us tonight and we looked a bit flat.

“Without Bennett and Cotterill we lack a bit of creativity at times out in the wide areas. We got stuck tonight and we couldn’t put them under enough pressure. We’ve got to roll our sleeves up and try and pick up three points against Bournemouth on Saturday.”

Rovers juniors take on Gateshead at the Keepmoat Stadium tonight (7pm) in the second round of the FA Youth Cup.
