DONCASTER ROVERS: Get away

DONCASTER Rovers stretched their unbeaten League One away record to eight games at Brunton Park last night.

Their 3-1 victory over Carlisle United saw Rovers, the only team in the top eight to win last night, climb into fourth place with a game in hand over the three teams above them.

Beaten only once on the road, Rovers have banked 23 points on their travels and now boast the best away record in the division.

“We have started really well and the season has gone better than expected; I didn’t expect us to be where we are,” said manager Dean Saunders.

“We played really well in the first half and I thought we were going to run away with it.

“Cotts (David Cotterill) supplied a great cross for the opening goal and Rob Jones’ finish was excellent; I told him he’d get a goal from a set-piece tonight.

“The second goal was a brilliant individual goal from Cotts; he bent it over the keeper.

“The third goal scored by Tommy Spurr in the second half from Cotterill’s free-kick, was another good score. It was difficult for them to defend in the wind and that had been our problem in the first half.

“They played with a lot of spirit after going 2-0 down and got it back to 2-1 in the second half with what is probably their goal of the season.”

Skipper Jones missed the second half after suffering blurred vision following a clash of heads.

“He’s okay now and I think he’ll be fit for Saturday’s home game against Scunthorpe,” said Saunders.
