IT didn’t happen overnight, but Doncaster Rovers’ boss Dean Saunders finally looks to have won over the supporters after steering the side into fifth spot in League One at the weekend following a third successive victory at Meadow Lane.

“We’ve picked up nine points from three really tough games, and although we were perhaps lucky to beat Brentford in the first game, I’m sure that is more than most people expected; I would have settled for five points,” said Supporters’ Club chairman Len South this week,

He added: “There might be one or two still doubting him but I think that the majority of supporters are thinking that he is starting to get it right. They are starting to sing his name during games and it’s nice to see him responding to it as well.

“There was criticism at times last season that he didn’t interact with fans. But that is not the case this season and he seems to be enjoying life at Doncaster and he’s got the twinkle in his eye back.

“There is still a long way to go, and we are only a third of the way through the season, but things are looking good at this stage.

“Our form, especially at home, was a bit patchy early on, but to be fair to Dean he didn’t really have a pre-season with the team as such because a lot of the players now starting games either joined the club at the end of pre-season or since. I think he’s happy with what he has to work with now, though it would be nice if we could bring in another couple of players to boost the squad.

“The jury is still out on Sammy Clingan and Andy Griffin because we’ve not seen much of them, but Dean’s judgement on players he has brought in since the end of last season speaks for itself, so we’ve got to trust him to get it right.

“Rob Jones has been absolutely immense and he’s won the Supporters’ Club Player of the Month award for October.

“Judging by some the things I’ve read, and some of the things I’ve heard, Sheffield Wednesday fans are absolutely going berserk about the loss of Jones. I can sympathise because I can’t imagine why they let him go during the summer. It’s as though his head is a magnet for the ball when it comes into the box.

“If we’d have had the same defence as we’ve got now in the Championship last season, I don’t think we’d have gone down.

“Iain Hume has proved a super signing. I know that he’s only on loan until January from Preston, but he’s admitted himself that he doesn’t feature in their plans and I hope that we can sign him permanently in January.”
