Doncaster Rovers: Dean Smith pleased his Walsall go unnoticed
WALSALL boss Dean Smith says he is happy for his side to operate under the radar.
The Saddlers have emerged as surprise play off contenders, despite enduring a 16 match winless streak from early October to just before Christmas.
A run of nine wins from 11 games has rocketed Smith’s side up League One and they currently sit four points off sixth place.
Walsall have the chance to cut the gap to the top sides even further this weekend when they visit Rovers.
Former Leyton Orient and Sheffield Wednesday striker Smith is confident his side can continue their rise up the table and is happy for the likes of Bournemouth to take all the attention.
He said: “We are happy to go under the radar.
“We don’t fear anyone, the players have maintained plenty of belief and confidence throughout the season – even during that tough run.
“They’ll continue going about their business, they’re organised and know their jobs.
“This a tough league where we’ve got to be at our best at all times regardless of the opposition.”
Smith admits he expected Rovers would be among the promotion chasers this season following their 3-0 win at Walsall on the opening day.
“Doncaster have got quality throughout their side,” Smith said. “They’ve been up there all season as we expected after the opening day.
“On that occasion we saw plenty of the ball and played some good stuff – it’s just they were more clinical on the day.
“For us, it’s all about seeing a progression and an improvement, both this season and from last.
“With 15 games to go, we’ve found ourselves in a good position but by the same token, we know we’ve got some difficult encounters ahead and they don’t come much tougher than going to Doncaster on Saturday.”
