DONCASTER ROVERS: A Meade show by Youth side

doncaster Rovers’ promising youngsters offered more optimism last night when they progressed to the second round of the FA Youth Cup.

The young Rovers, unbeaten North-East Alliance leaders, led for most of a hard-fought game and beat North-West strugglers Morecambe 1-0 in the first round at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Rovers opened the scoring on 10 minutes. Midfielder Josh Meade latched on to skipper Harry Middleton’s through ball, and he drilled his shot past the keeper to open the scoring against the run of play.

The Shrimpers quickly regained the initiative and would have drawn level on 16 minutes but for a superb finger-tip save by keeper Aaron Busby from captain Will Bell’s bullet-header from a corner.

The bigger of the two sides, Morecambe continued to enjoy the better of the territorial exchanges.

Rovers had claims for a penalty turned down for the second time in the first half after winger Evan Finnegan took a tumble following what looked to be a two-footed tackle in the box.

Rovers made a bright start to the second half with striker Alex Peterson troubling Cookson with an angled shot.

Finnegan’s angled shot on 55 minutes just cleared the bar after getting a slight deflection.

Wearing just cleared the bar on 66 minutes to underline that the visitors were still in the game,

Billy Whitehouse won Rovers a 70th minute corner after cutting in from the flank only to see his shot blocked.

Morecambe’s Lewis Finney had a goal-bound effort cleared off the line on 81 minutes.

Rovers: Busby , M Lund, Binns, Brown, Dawson, Whitehouse (Steadman 85), Meade, Middleton, Finnegan, Peterson, Burnyeat. Subs (unused): Myers, S Lund, J McKay, P McKay.
