Doncaster: Defender agrees short-term deal

ANDY Griffin is poised to sign a short term contract with Rovers until the end of the season.

The 33-year-old defender has verbally agreed a deal with boss Dean Saunders after arriving on non-contract terms in October.

The former Newcastle and Stoke City star could be the first of several January signings as Saunders seeks to bolster his squad for the run-in.

Saunders said: “We’ve agreed something verbally with Griff.

“I’m pleased because he’s an experienced professional and he can play at right back or left back.

“It’s not just that though, because he’s also the type of lad that’s always talking to the likes of James Husband, Jamie McCombe and Rob Jones, giving his opinion on the game.

“He’s a good lad,” added Saunders.

“He found himself without a club and he’s playing for us for not a lot of money.”

Saunders’ mobile phone was red hot at the end of yesterday’s weekly press conference at Cantley Park, with Rovers’ boss refusing to rule out a possible new addition before tomorrow’s clash with Colchester.

With Billy Paynter suspended for three games and Chris Brown struggling with a groin problem, a striker would appear to be at the top of Saunders’ wanted list - although he stopped short of revealing his priorities.

“There will be a few arrivals,” said Saunders. “There’s a few spots in the squad which are not quite right, but I don’t want to tell everybody about that.

“But in my own mind I know where we need to strengthen. We need different types of players so we’ve got all bases covered.

“If it’s a scrap, we need players who can scrap. If it’s a football match, we need players for that.

“I just need to make sure I sign the right player.”
